The foundation of Commffest is using film, music and the arts to tell stories that matter. Preserve culture, amplify diverse voices and use storytelling to build understanding between communities.
Commffest uses film and digital media as educational tools while creating opportunities for young people, seniors, filmmakers and emerging creators to learn from one another. This includes filmmaking workshops, school screenings, mentorship, digital literacy, oral histories, youth filmmaking and intergenerational storytelling. Purpose: Transfer knowledge and give people the skills and platforms to tell their own stories.
Through Commffest Global, the organization connects Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, the diaspora and other international communities through partnerships, screenings, conferences and collaborative projects. Purpose: Turn Commffest from an annual Toronto festival into a year-round global cultural network.
Commffest TV becomes the digital engine connecting the other pillars. The platform can support streaming, independent film distribution, virtual festivals, live discussions, educational programming, youth-created content, digital archives, AI-assisted media production and international knowledge exchange. Purpose: Use technology to give independent filmmakers and communities greater control over how their stories are created, preserved and distributed.
This pillar connects storytelling to practical community action. Commffest can convene people around issues affecting communities and use media to document solutions and share successful models. African food security, community farming, sustainable agriculture, locally produced organic fertilizer, youth employment, cultural preservation and community development. Purpose: Move from simply discussing social issues through film to connecting storytelling + education + partnerships + action.
